High House is an award-winning wedding venue in Althorne, Chelmsford, with breathtaking gardens, meadows and vineyard. We're licensed for indoor and outdoor ceremonies, offering you an exclusive experience.
When it comes to your special day, High House provides the perfect setting to say "I do." Our elegant English country gardens create a spectacular backdrop that will leave you and your guests in awe. For your ceremony, we offer you the choice between our rustic Essex barn, full of charm with its oak beams and exposed red brick, or an outdoor setting under our gorgeous thatched gazebo. The decision is all yours!
When you step inside our lovingly restored Grade II listed Essex Barn, which dates back to 1750, and you'll be enchanted by its wonderful character and flooded with natural light through the full-height windows. It's a truly special place for you to exchange your vows and start your journey together as a married couple.
After you've tied the knot, our stable courtyard is at your service, offering a delightful spot for reception drinks. With a stunning view of the pond and our picturesque bridge, it's the perfect place for your guests to mingle and capture beautiful photographs.
Experience our elegant marquee for your wedding celebrations. With breathtaking views across our lake and vineyard, it's perfect for a memorable reception, whether it's a barbecue or a more formal wedding breakfast.
And let us share a little secret with you: High House has a secluded cottage called the "Couples Retreat." It's tucked away in its own secret garden, accessible through a charming solid oak door. As you enter, you'll be greeted by the beautiful cottage surrounded by gravel gardens and pretty flowers. Inside, you'll find a sumptuous bedroom with a freestanding bath and en-suite, a cosy lounge, and a fully equipped kitchen. It's the perfect place for you and your partner to escape on your wedding night.

Yes, we have a civil ceremony licence and can offer beautiful indoor and outdoor ceremony spaces to our couples, in a choice of locations.
Absolutely, our thatched gazebo is a stunning setting for outdoor ceremonies, or you can get married by our lake or in the vineyard.
We have a recommended caterer for the wedding breakfast, who is familiar with the kitchens here and always a popular choice with couples, and you are welcome to use our recommended caterer or bring in a BBQ, hog roast, pizzas or food trucks for casual dining in the evening.
The barn and marquee need minimal additional decoration but you are welcome to come in on the morning of your wedding.
Yes - our Couples Retreat is a real hidden gem with it's own private secluded gardens, and is the perfect place to spend your wedding night.
There are plenty of pubs and a hotel for wedding guests in nearby Burnham-on Crouch
We have a private car park at High House plenty of space for your wedding guests. Vehicles can be left overnight, but we ask that they are collected between 8am-10am the following morning.
We have a lovely preparation suite with loads of natural light, in its own gardens with a swimming pool for great pre-wedding photos.
We have a specially designed "Jack and Jill" room for the registrar to meet you both, with separate doors so there is no chance of you seeing each other before the ceremony!
Our Sustainability Commitments
Being set within the beautiful Essex countryside, sustainability is an important consideration for us. To minimise the impact on our environment there are many things that we do at High House, for example; - in mind of the amount of wildlife that surrounds us we use fresh petal confetti to ensure no harm to the many ducks/birds we have on site. Our team distribute the petals to guests in handfuls so no need for individual containers per person for the confetti throw! - having a vineyard next to us, we use as much wine from it at our weddings as possible knowing its origin - minimise noise effects to the local community by having a very sophisticated sound system that ensures we do not effect levels outside of our venue itself - we have a recommended supplier list of local businesses for all aspects of a couples day - working as paper free as possible - recycling everything we can We strive to learn and maximise our sustainability as time goes on, always welcoming ideas from our couples themselves.
