Rebecca Steinfield and Charles Keidan have won their legal battle for a civil partnership instead of a marriage, after the Supreme Court ruled unanimously in favour following the rejection of the case by the Court of Appeal in February 2017.

The couple say the tradition of marriage where women were treated as the property of the men was not something they believed in, and felt a civil partnership, which only applies to same-sex couples, was more relevant to them, allowing them set an example of equality to their future children.
A civil partnership offers equality for both parties, offering legal and financial protection equally should the relationship end, as well not holding the religious, proprietary or patriarchal connotations that marriage entails.
This development may mean that the government seriously considers changing the law to call for equality in the future, with over 130,000 campaigners signing a petition in support of the move.
